Annual Neighborhood Clean-Up Set to Begin April 9th

March 28, 2011

March 28, 2011 - Omaha citizens can now find out when and where this year’s Neighborhood Clean-Up will be available for their neighborhood by calling (402) 444-4636. The highly successful Spring Clean-Up Program will begin April 9th and will be conducted at events on six Saturdays during the months of April and May. Spring Clean-Up dates are scheduled for the following Saturdays: April 9th, April 16th, April 30th, May 7th, May 14th and May 21st. There will be no Clean-Up dates after Memorial Day this year.

Disposal opportunities for bulky or difficult to dispose of items such as chairs, couches, appliances and tires will be available in participating neighborhoods across the city. Spring Clean-Up also offers the opportunity to dispose of large limbs and brush not eligible for the City’s weekly yard waste collection. Each Clean-Up site will have vouchers available that will cover the disposal cost of tree limbs and brush at an off-site location that day. Appliances, tires and automotive batteries will only be collected at one designated site each Clean-Up Saturday. These locations can be obtained by calling the Neighborhood Clean-Up Hotline at (402) 444-4636. Full railroad ties will not be accepted at any Clean-Up locations.

In 2010, more than 1,400 tons of unwanted items, 95 tons of scrap tires, and nearly 600 junk appliances were disposed of thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. This year, 100 neighborhood groups will participate in the Neighborhood Clean-Up program at 83 different locations throughout Omaha.

"This is a great way for residents of Omaha to collaborate on a worthy project," said Mayor Jim Suttle. "The Annual Neighborhood Clean-Up presents an opportunity for neighborhood groups to come together to make their community a better place to live."

The Neighborhood Clean-Up Program is funded by the City of Omaha and managed by City Staff, Keep Omaha Beautiful, Inc. and partnering neighborhood and community groups.
