Designed by notable Omaha architect John Latenser, Center School is one of only a very few major examples of the Richardsonian Romanesque style remaining in Omaha. Based on the work of nationally known architect H. H. Richardson, the style was very popular in the late 1880s and early 1890s, particularly for public buildings and large-scale houses. Ultimately, Latenser designed 35 Omaha schools, the most important being Central High School. (This building is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.)
