- Melrose Apartments
- 602 North 33rd Street

- Architect: H. D. Frankfurt
- Style: L - Court apartment
- Designated Omaha Landmark: March 17, 1992
As the street car railway
system in Omaha began to expand its service area in the early twentieth century, much of
the working population was able to live outside the crowded central business district. The
city was growing rapidly at the time and many developers responded to the need for housing
by building apartment houses on or near the expanding street car lines. The Melrose is a
good example of this situation. It is located at the intersection of 33rd and California
Streets, the intersection at which a streetcar line running west along California turned
north to proceed along 33rd.
The Melrose is comprised of
two buildings situated at right angles to one another, forming an L-plan. A courtyard
faces the street corner and the neighborhood commercial district. The three-story Melrose
rises above the nearby commercial buildings and stands as a landmark for the local
community.
(This building is also
listed in the National Register of Historic Places.)
