The term ?ECOmaha? is a blend of the acronym ECO and Omaha. The ?ECO? stands for "Environment," "Community," and "Opportunity;" while Omaha is the nation?s 42nd largest city and the largest city in Nebraska.

The mission of ECOmaha is to promote integrated decision-making and strategic actions by City government and the community-at-large that foster environmental quality, build community capacity, and advance economic opportunities for residents, businesses, and government.

ECOmaha is a collaborative effort to realize the goals identified in the Environment Element, a section of the City?s Master Plan approved by City Council in December 2010. The Environment Element offers a comprehensive and unifying vision, developed through a two-year community-based process, for the long-term environmental health and sustainability of the Omaha community and the natural resources and ecosystems on which it depends. ECOmaha is coordinated by the City of Omaha?s Office of Sustainable Development, under the direction of the city?s Planning Department.

The ECOmaha web site will be used to identify and communicate the Policies, Programs, Projects, and Progress related to Omaha?s sustainability initiatives.
